FROM BOARD CHAIRMAN, KIRKLAND A. MASON
Notice of New Management Company

Three years ago, your Board of Directors took a leap of faith with an innovative idea designed to establish and strengthen a positive, sustaining course for the future of LeadingAge Tennessee. As a result, we forged a partnership with two strong, well-managed associations, LeadingAge Texas and LeadingAge North Carolina. This three-year agreement propelled the Tennessee association into the strongest position we’ve enjoyed in many years.

We have now come to the end of this management agreement and the board has considered strategies to continue our growth trajectory while better meeting the needs of our members. After much consideration and examining many options, the board has unanimously agreed to partner with Solinity to help carry out this mission.

Solinity is a senior living management company that brings the talent and resources needed to assist LeadingAge Tennessee in this endeavor. Our goal is to continue to be a strong voice influencing legislative issues important to you, our members, in addition to creating educational and networking opportunities that serve to sustain us as leaders in our industry.

Social Connectedness & Engagement Technology Selection Tool

Reduce Social Isolation in Your Community
Social isolation is consistently associated with depression and reduced well-being, health, and quality of life. It can increase the risk of death by as much as 45%. Unfortunately, social isolation is common, with rates as high as 43% in community-dwelling older adults.

Technology can help elders maintain and enhance relationships with peers, family, friends, and caregivers.

LeadingAge’s Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST) has released a new Social Connectedness and Engagement Technology Selection Tool to help you plan for, select, and implement the best solution for your organization to address this challenge.

CMS issued the Emergency Preparedness Requirements for Medicare and Medicaid Participating Providers and Suppliers Final Rule to establish consistent emergency preparedness requirements for healthcare providers participating in Medicare and Medicaid, increase patient safety during emergencies, and establish a more coordinated response to natural and human-caused disasters. It is critical for Home Health, Hospice, Skilled nursing Facilities and PACE organizations to develop effective and robust emergency plans and responses.

The final Emergency Preparedness Rule released by CMS published in the 9/16/16 Federal Register and effective 11/15/16 states nursing homes, home health, hospice, and PACE have until 11/15/17 to implement the new Emergency preparedness requirements.

Asbury Place Previews New Memory Care Option at Holiday-themed Open House

On Wednesday, December 6 Asbury Place residents, health care professionals, and community members enjoyed a preview of Alpine House, a new memory care neighborhood at Asbury Place in Maryville that offers supportive, caring assistance and health services for older adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

This winter the continuing care retirement community in Maryville will open both Alpine and Beech houses, which together will offer 44 residential memory care suites.

“The addition of Alpine and Beech houses is part of Asbury Place’s mission to making our community as comfortable, welcoming and accommodating as possible,” said Carolyn Neil, regional director of clinical services for Asbury Place. “These neighborhoods are designed to create a safe, secure and relaxed atmosphere where residents can come together with their family and friends and sit around the fireplace or enjoy a family dinner.”

Woodcrest at Blakeford Receives National Quality Award

Blakeford at Green Hills’ Nursing Center Joins Small But Elite Group in Tennessee

Blakeford at Green Hills recently announced that their skilled nursing center, Woodcrest at Blakeford, has received the prestigious Silver Quality Award from the American Healthcare Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL).

The AHCA/NCAL national quality award program is a three-tier process setting high standards for quality and performance. The criteria for each step – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – are based on the Health Care Criteria from the Baldridge Performance Excellence Program.

Of the 316 licensed nursing homes in Tennessee, only six hold a Silver Quality Award and Woodcrest is one of that group. There are currently no Gold Quality Award providers in Tennessee.

“We are honored to be recognized in this way,” says Blakeford President and CEO, Van Cluck. “It’s a great affirmation that the care we provide to our residents is of the highest standards.”

LeadingAge Tennessee Pedals for Pat

When senior living visionary and LeadingAge Tennessee Board Member Joshua Crisp first came up with the idea, it seemed like a daunting task. He planned to become a cyclist and lead a team riding 1,098 miles over 11 days from Tennessee to Florida to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s in honor of Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history with a total of 1,098 wins. Summitt was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at the age of 59 and passed away last year after a five-year battle with the disease. Not only did the eight-person team – The Summitt Cyclists – ride on average 100 miles a day, but they exceeded fundraising expectations and raised more than $150,000! University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball Hall of Famer Michelle Brooke-Marciniak co-chaired the cycling event with Crisp, Founder, CEO of Solinity, a progressive senior living owner/operator.

The team will donate the funds raised to The Pat Summitt Foundation, a nonprofit organization which helps fund The Pat Summitt Clinic at The University of Tennessee Medical Center focused on patient care, caregiver support and clinical research – all to assist families and seniors facing Alzheimer’s disease.
