UPCOMING 2020 CENSUS:
Several of you have asked about how various aspects of the census will work. Here is some information that may be helpful as you encourage the older adults in your communities to participate.

TRENDS:
We receive hundreds of emails outlining trends and predictions for the coming year, but who has time to read them? Thanks to our friends at LeadingAge Maryland, we offer you the 2020 Trends Highlights with quick links if you want to dig deeper on certain topics.

Assisted Living Advisory Group:
With close to one million assisted living residents nationwide, we are quickly reaching (or may have already reached) a tipping point in concerns about quality and safety.  Congressional attention is on the rise. (https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-18-179 and https://www.gao.gov/assets/710/700985.pdf)  The number of media exposes is increasing and state legislatures are responding. Because of this, LeadingAge has established a new Assisted Living Advisory Group, consisting of 13 members, each serving a two year term, to support and guide the development and implementation of a constructive, future-focused action plan to promote smart approaches to quality in assisted living and memory care. The first meeting will be this month and we will keep you informed on the progress. If you would like to be involved, contact Gwyn Earl.

Medicare Advantage Supplemental Benefit Toolkit Unveiled:
new toolkit from LeadingAge will help guide members through understanding how Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits work, assessing the activity in each member’s market, evaluating the opportunity and which plans to approach, and providing a template for making the case to Medicare Advantage plans about the benefits of the services you provide in terms the plans understand.

Looking Ahead: Hospice in 2020
Hospice News; December 19, 2019
The hospice space is evolving and providers will likely spend much of 2020 girding themselves for more change, including movement towards value-based payment models, accelerating industry consolidation, and possible changes to reimbursement, among others. The article includes comments from LeadingAge's Mollie Gurian, director, hospice, palliative and home health policy for LeadingAge national.
