As our Association pauses to reflect on 35 years of support for aging services providers, so too are our previous Executive Directors reflecting on their time with LeadingAge Tennessee. These leaders were instrumental in developing and nurturing partnerships, giving LeadingAge Tennessee (formerly TNAHSA) the necessary momentum and guidance to continue serving the providers, residents, and caregivers of our great state.

Doug Pace shares his thoughts about his time in the director seat:

LOOKING BACK ON 35 YEARS
REFLECTIONS

What was your most impactful moment or experience as a LeadingAge Tennessee executive director?

  • There are so many but a few that stand out are -
    • The Association’s leadership in the passage in 1998 of legislation creating the licensure category of Assisted-Care Living Facilities.
    • Expanding the Association’s role in advocacy, including Anne Carr joining as government relations lobbyist.
    • The Association’s partnership with the Tennessee Hospital Association which expanded our presence across the state.
    • Representing the Association as a Governor’s appointee to the Tennessee Long-Term Care Advisory Council.

Working with members can be so rewarding. Can you share a special member memory or highlight?

  • My many travels across the state, which I nicknamed “The Tennessee Swing” from the Mississippi River to the Appalachian Mountains and everywhere in between, to see firsthand the members’ commitment to their residents’ quality of care and quality of life.

When you considered the future of LeadingAge Tennessee during your tenure, what did you imagine it would be?

  • My vision was that the Association would continue to be the leading voice at the state level and in partnership nationally with LeadingAge in Washington D.C. by providing the membership with quality educational offerings, a strong advocacy voice at the state and national level, and access to quality products and services

What are you most proud of during your work with LeadingAge Tennessee?

  • It was a privilege to lead the Association at such a pivotal time and to work hand-in-hand with those early visionary Board members. Their dedication was inspiring, and it was an honor to collaborate with them in shaping the future of the Association and the landscape of Tennessee’s aging services across the continuum of long-term and community-based care.
